    Description: 
    A full-length portrait of Frederick Douglass, his hands outstretched, palms upward. He has a beard and moustache and wears a greatcoat, bow tie, and vest with watch chain. He steps forward with his proper right foot forward, with his toe extending beyond the bronze base. The sculpture is mounted on a cylindrical granite drum with four commemorative bronze plaques encircling the drum. The drum sits on an octagonal base, atop a block base.

    Remarks: 
    The monument commemorates reformer Frederick Douglass. It was formerly located in downtown Rochester and the 1994 SOS! survey reports it was moved to its present location (near the site of Douglass' home) more than thirty years ago. Plaque text includes excerpt from a speech Douglass made on the Dred Scott decision in New York in May, 1857; and his speech on the West Indiana emancipation, delivered at Canadaigua, New York, on Aug. 4, 1857.
