    Description:
Six larger-than life size figures depict the rescue of Mrs. Margaret Helm, stepdaughter of fur trader John Kinzie. The Indians allied with the British and attached white settlers who had just evacuated Fort Dearborn during the War of 1812. The central figure, Mrs. Helm, grabs the knife of an attacking Indian who raises his tomahawk. The protective arm of the friendly Potawatomi chief, Black Partridge, intervenes to save her life. The small child at the Indian's feet is a symbol for the twelve children killed in the massacre. The garrison physician, Doctor Voorhis, lies mortally wounded behind the struggling group.

    Provenance:
Formerly located Chicago Historical Society, Clark Street at North Avenue, Lobby, Chicago, Illinois 60614 1931.
Formerly located 18th and Calumet, Chicago Illinois 1893.
Formerly located Clarke House, 18th Street between Prairie & Indiana Avenues, Grounds, Chicago, Illinois
    Remarks:
The monument's subtitle, The Potawatomi Rescue, was added in 1972 in response to growing feeling that the original title reflected only the hostility and not the lifesaving role of the Indians. Originally four low relief bronze plates illustrating four other incidents in the massacre story were attached to the granite base. Two of these disappeared in the 1920s and two are in storage. Bach and Gray publication provided granite as the base media and the SOS survey questionnaire provided marble. Sculpture was originally located on Prairie Avenue, close to where the attack occurred, but in 1931 it was moved to the lobby of the Chicago Historical Society. It was returned to an outdoor location near Prairie sometime after it was photographed for the Riedy publication which shows the sculpture in the Chicago Historical Society lobby.
