    Description: 
    Full-length portrait of Major General David McMurtrie Gregg, seated atop his horse. He is dressed in military uniform with knee-length double-breasted buttoned coat, belted, gloves with long cuffs, boots and hat. He holds a drawn sabre in his proper right hand at his side. He holds the horse's reins in his proper left hand. The horse has all four feet on the ground. The sculpture is mounted atop a granite base with two steps and surrounding brick plaza.

    Remarks: 
    David McMurtrie Gregg was born in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania in 1833 and attended West Point, graduating in 1855. He was Colonel of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry and rose to rank of Brigadier General by Nov. 1862. Following the Civil War, he took up permanent residence in Reading, Pennsylvania. He died August 7, 1916. IAS files contain related excerpt from Historic Preservation News, August 1995, discussing restoration plans for the memorial.     A bronze plaque 15 feet in front of memorial reads: MAJOR GENERAL DAVID MCMURTRIE GREGG/COMMANDER UNION CAVALRY, WHOSE/ACHIEVEMENTS CONTRIBUTED SO LARGELY TO SUCCESS AND ULTIMATE/VICTORY AT GETTYSBURG JULY 1863/TURNING THE TIDE OF THE WAR./AN UPRIGHT CHRISTIAN GENTLEMAN/A LOYAL CITIZEN; A STAUNCH DEFENDER/OF THE CONSTITUTION/AN EARNEST ADVOCATE OF PEACE.
