    Description: 
    A terrazzo fountain with a tall central shaft topped by a gilded copper eagle. Around the bottom of the shaft are four lion's heads fountain spouts that once poured water for horses into small recessed bowls around the perimeter of the base.

    Remarks: 
    The fountain commemorates George Thorndike Angell (1823-1909), founder of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the American Humane Educational Society. The school children of Boston collected money to help pay for the memorial. The memorial was renovated in 1957. The central column was once used as a flag pole for the Post Office.
    IAS files contain a June 25, 1957 press release announcing the renovation of Angell Memorial Plaza; and articles from the Boston Sunday Globe, June 22, 1975, pg. E2 and The Boston Globe, July 22, 1991, pg. 42, 46.
