    Remarks:
Dr. Willoughby Dayton Miller (1853-1907) was a doctor and researcher in dentistry who discovered the bacterial cause of tooth decay. This statue, the first installed at the University, was erected by the International Dental Federation for $5,000. Ohio dentists contributed $1,500 and the remainder was paid for by dentists from the other states. The site was intended to be temporary, pending completion of a group of medical buildings. When the statue was moved on May 2, 1978, a time capsule was discovered in the base. Its contents were given to the Dental School. The sculpture was refurbished in April 1985. IAS files include related articles from the University publications: the Lantern, Oct. 24, 1972, April 16, 1974, May 2, 1978, May 3, 1978, May 4, 1978; On Campus, Sept. 1978, May 11, 1979, and the Ohio State Journal, Dec. 9, 1915.
