Description:
Six reliefs installed on the facade of a building depict the history of the Ohio River Valley area. Panel one shows an 18th century Miami Indian in tribal dress holding a peace pipe in his proper left hand. A bear, typical of the wild animals of the time, stands beside him. Panel two represents the pioneers who swelled Ohio's population in the early 19th century. A standing guide leans on his musket, and a traveler kneels at his feet. Johnny Appleseed is featured on panel three as a bearded man planting a tree. A boy learns how tend the plant as his mother and infant sister look on. Statesmanship and education are represented on the fourth panel with the state seal and full length portraits of Rutherford B. Hayes, Governor of Ohio and President of the United States, and William Holmes McGuffey, an educator. An early school desk and school bell also appear in the image.
Panel five depicts Ohio's agricultural and industrial features. A standing, bare-chested male figure holds a scythe in his proper left hand and a model of the Wright Brothers' airplane in his proper right hand. Seated below is a potter making a base on his pottery wheel. Ohio's steel, coal and milling industries are represented on the sixth panel. A male figure holds a ladle in his proper right hand and a model of an ore boat in his proper left hand. The figure also wears a foundry apron. Other images include a crucible pouring molten steel, miners loading coal into cars and wheel to represent the milling industry.
