Remarks:
The monument is the oldest public sculpture in Los Angeles. The Monument Committee of the Chamber of Commerce selected S. M. Goddard of Goddard & Kilpatrick to design the sculpture as a memorial to the twenty-one Seventh Regiment men from southern California who died while stationed at The Presidio in San Francisco during the Spanish-American War. Theodore Eisen and Sumner Hunt were the supervising architects for the installation of the monument. The base was crated by the Pacific Marble and Granite Company. $3,000 to fund the project was raised by an exhibition drill given by the Seventh Regiment while in camp at Agricultural Park on Thanksgiving 1898. The monument was originally located in the northeast corner of the park and has been relocated within the park several times, prior to its current setting. Originally, the base was twice as tall. Sections of that base were removed, including a section inscribed "Everlasting Remembrances." IAS files include articles from Los Angeles Times dated May 31, 1900, and Los Angeles Evening Express dated May 13, 1899 and Nov. 13, 1899. The monument has been declared a "Historic Cultural Monument (no. 480)" by the Los Angeles City Cultural Heritage Commission. The U.S.C. Regional History Center and Los Angeles Public Library have photographs of the original monument.
