    Remarks:
In 1855, the state legislature appropriated $2,000 to erect a monument atop a 42 foot granite column over the grave of Ethan Allen in Burlington's Green Mountain Cemetery. Mead submitted a design and plaster model for the Burlington site in early 1858. A lack of funds caused the collapse of the project, but the General Assembly chose the design in 1859 for the newly designed portico of the State House in Monteplier. It was unveiled there at a gala ceremony on Oct. 10, 1861. The statue survived the State House fire in the early 1900s, but by the late 1930s had begun to crumble. The sculpture was used in an advertisement for the Vermont Marble Company in Monumental News, Oct. 1921 issue.
