    Remarks:
Upon the death of Edward Everett (1794-1865), clergyman, Congressman, Senator, Governor of Massachusetts, Minister to Great Britain, Secretary of State, and President of Harvard, an Edward Everett Statue Committee was formed to erect a suitable memorial to the renowned orator. The public subscription was so enthusiastic that the amount needed was soon raised with an excess balance. The left over funds paid for two other tributes to Everett, a bust by Thomas Ball and a portrait by Moses Wight, and the remaining $5,000 went toward Ball's equestrian statue of George Washington in Boston Public Garden (IAS record 76004864).
Originally, the Everett sculpture was located in Boston Public Garden, but in 1911 it was moved to Edward Everett Square where it remained until 1931 when it was removed because it was thought to be a traffic hazard. In 1935, after spending four years in storage, the sculpture was relocated to Richardson Park.
