Located Commonwealth Avenue Mall, Between Clarendon & Dartmouth Streets, Boston, Massachusetts
    Provenance:
Formerly located Commonwealth Avenue & Charlesgate West, Boston, Massachusetts until 1966.
    Remarks:
Patrick Collins (1844-1905) was Mayor of Boston from 1902-1905. He died suddenly while still in office and there was such concern to erect a monument to him that funds were raised by public subscription within a six day period. The sculpture was located at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Charlesgate West until 1966 when it was relocated due to construction of a new overpass and IAS files contain an article from The Christian Science Monitor, June 23, 1966 which describes the controversy over the relocation of the sculpture. IAS files also contain an excerpt from Allan Forbes and Ralph M. Eastman's "Other Statues of Boston," Boston, MA: State Street Trust Company, 1947, pg. 36-38 which includes an image of the sculpture before it was relocated; and an Acid Rain Study survey sheet dated November 28, 1979 which includes a brief condition assessment. The sculpture was restored in 1985 by a grant from the George B. Henderson Foundation and has since been adopted as part of the Boston Adopt-A-Statue program.
