    Description:
The monument is composed of a tall, round grey granite base on which the bronze figure of Roman matron Cornelia is mounted. Seven male figures are mounted in an outward facing circle approximately twelve feet beneath the feet of the figure of Cornelia. The seven figures are men from Ohio: Ulysses S. Grant, Philip Henry Sheridan, Edwin McMasters Stanton, James A. Garfield, Rutherford B. Hayes, Salmon P. Chase, and William Tecumseh Sherman. Each figure stands on a half-round base. The identities of the figures are inscribed on the front of the base and on a plaques mounted beneath each figure on the stone base.

    Located Capitol, Columbus, Ohio
    Exhibitions:
    World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893.
    Remarks:
The sculpture was funded by the State of Ohio at a cost of $30,000. It was first exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, but at that time the work depicted Cornelia and only six male figures from Ohio. The seventh figure, Rutherford B. Hayes, was not added until the work was installed on Capitol Square in Columbus, Ohio in 1894. American Bronze Company cast the figures of Stanton and Chase; Ames Manufacturing Company cast the figures of Garfield, Hayes, and Grant; and Bureau Brothers cast the figures of Sherman and Sheridan.
The monument was removed because of construction of an underground parking garage in the 1960s; it was returned in 1965. The monument was removed again in 1989 as part of the restoration of the Capitol; the monument was restored before being returned in Nov. 1992.
The concept of a sculpture of Cornelia to symbolize Ohio memorializing her famous sons, was proposed by General Roeliff Brinkerhoff in 1891. Cornelia was a Roman whose rich friends mocked her lack of jewels; in response she presented her sons as her "jewels." Her sons later ruled Rome as the Gracchi.
