Remarks:
The statue commemorates John Glover, a Marblehead resident who organized a military group that later became known as the United States Marines. Born in Salem, Glover (1732-1797) was a fish merchant and owner of a fishing fleet. The regiment that he led joined the Continental Army and Glover was considered Secretary of the Navy. His regiment of boats saved Washington's army after the Battle of Long Island. It was Glover and his men who rowed General Washington and his troops across the Delaware in 1776. After the war, Glover served as a Representative and a Selectman in the Massachusetts Legislature. The statue was given to the city by Benjamin T. Reed. See IAS files for full transcription of text on base plaque. IAS files also contain a copy of a Dec. 26, 1871 letter from Martin Milmore describing the accomplishments of General Glover.
