    Description: 
    A standing portrait of Williams Carter Wickham in his Confederate uniform with his proper right hand holding the case for his field glasses which is strapped across his chest and his proper left hand holding a pair of gloves behind his back. A sword once was attached to his proper left side, but the sword is now missing. The sculpture rests atop a tall square base.

    Provenance: 
    Formerly located Monroe Park, West side of park, North Laurel Street between Main & Franklin Streets, Richmond, Virginia 1891-2020.
    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was erected by the Wickham Monument Association. Wickham was a Confederate army cavalryman with the 4th Virginia Regiment who later became the vice president of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. The figure's sword was removed by vandals in August 1956. IAS files contain an excerpt from Elizabeth Gray Valentine's "Dawn to Twilight, Work of Edward V. Valentine," Richmond, VA: The William Byrd Press, 1929, pg. 151-152, 182; and newspaper articles from The Times (Richmond, VA), Oct. 30, 1891; and the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Aug. 6, 1956 and Aug. 7, 1956.
