Remarks:
Sarmiento is a former President of Argentina who was known as the father of public education in Argentina. He modeled the public school system of Argentina after the public school system in Boston. The monument was a gift to the City of Boston from the government of Argentina. Mayor John F. Fitzgerald accepted the gift in 1913, but the sculpture was not commissioned and shipped from Buenos Aires until 1973. The sculpture was cleaned and conserved in October 1993 by the Fogg Center of Harvard University Art Museums. IAS files contain a copy of the Condition Survey of Boston Sculpture form dated Nov. 28, 1979. For additional information see the files of the Boston Art Commission.
