    Description: 
    Full-length portrait of Israel Putnam, dressed in 18th century military uniform, including a frock coat with epaulets and frilly cravat, and riding boots with spurs. He stands in mid-stride, his proper right arms grasps a tricorn hat with eagle rosettes. His proper left hand grasps the handle of a sword at his side.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was commissioned in 1872 or 1873 by the Honorable Joseph Pratt Allyn (Hartford native and Associate Justice for the U.S. Court for the Territory of Arizona) and presented to the city on June 17, 1874. The sculpture cost $14,000. The city paid $2,150 for the pedestal. According to an article in The Aldine (Aug. 1874): pg. 168, the artist modeled the face from a John Trumbull portrait of Putnam and from a pen and ink profile portrait in the possession of the family.
