(On east side of sculpture on marble plaque, raised:) THIS MONUMENT GUARDS THE MEMORY/OF THE MEN OF CHESTER DISTRICT/WHO OBEYING THE CALL OF THEIR STATE/DIED FOR THE CONFEDERATE CAUSE/1861-1865/TIME MAY CRUMBLE THIS MARBLE INTO DUST/BUT TIME CAN NOT DIM THEIR GLORY./THEIR PATRIOTISM, THEIR VALOR, THEIR/FAITHFULNESS AND THEIR FAME REMAIN/FOREVER THE HERITAGE OF THEIR/COUNTRYMEN./NON SIBI SED PATRIAE. (On west side of sculpture:) Their fame increases like the/Branches of a tree through the/Hidden Courses of Time (On cornerstone, incised:) ERECTED BY/DAUGHTERS/OF THE/CONFEDERACY./1905. unsigned

Rough cut shaft with cluster of sculpted cannonballs at the top. Lower portion of shaft has marble panels on all four sides, with east and west sides inscribed. North marble panel has a relief of crossed sabres, and south panel has a relief of crossed rifles with bayonets. Shaft sits atop a stepped base.

The money for the monument was raised between 1865-1905 by various groups and individuals, including the Daughters of the Confederacy. The total cost of the monument was $2,000. The cornerstone, filled with historical documents, was laid May 10, 1905. IAS files contain related article from "History of Chester County," pg. 39-41.
