It was purchased by/The George Washington University in 1932 on the occasion of/the George Washington Bicentennial. After standing in a/number of locations on the campus, the statue found its/permanent home in the University yard and was dedicated/on this spot September 6, 1991. "George Washington" is/part of The George Washington University Permanent Collection. (Seal of Virginia on the right) Copied from the original by Houdon in the /state capitol at Richmond by special permission/of the General Assembly of Virginia.     Description: 
    Standing portrait of George Washington dressed in his military uniform. His proper right hand rests on a cane. On his proper right hand rests on top of his cloak which is thrown over a fasces, the Roman symbol of power and authority. A ploughshare, the symbol of the peaceful arts, rests against the fasces.

    Remarks: 
    Sculpture is a cast by Gorham from the original located in the Virginia State Capitol at Richmond. Gorham was authorized to make the cast by the General Assembly of Virginia. The sculpture was installed on the east wall of Corcoran Hall in the 1930s, but was later moved indoors to the old library building at 2023 G Street. In the early 1970s it was relocated to the lower lobby of Lisner Auditorium. It was installed at its present site in May 1991 after conservation. IAS files contain a copy Ronald E. Heaton's "The Image of Washington, The History of Houdon's Statue" which describes the original Washington statue and the subsequent authorization of casts. IAS files also contain copies of a brochure describing the original statue located at the Virginia State Capitol and information from The George Washington University files on the various placements of the sculpture around the campus.
