Description:
Seated portrait of John Carroll, the founder of Georgetown University, dressed in ecclesiastical attire. Both hands rest on the arms of his chair and in his proper right hand he holds a book, marking a place with his index finger.His head is turned slightly to his proper right. His robes are spread over the back and arms of the chair. The area beneath his chair is stacked with books. The figure of John Carroll is depicted with collar-length hair brushed back from his face. His lips are pressed together in a fine line. He stairs straight ahead.

Remarks:
The sculpture was a gift of the Georgetown Alumni Association. Over the years, the sculpture has been the victim of student pranks one of which included painting the figure red. In 1934, the space beneath the chair was filled in with bronze books to discourage students from placing commodes there.
