Remarks:
Funded with a National Endowment for the Arts, Art in Public Places grant of $20,000 given in 1974 to the City of Seattle. Additional funding was provided by Seattle Center One Percent for Art, Contemporary Art Council of the Seattle Art Museum, Virginia Wright Fund, and AIA's Seattle chapter. A full-size plywood mockup of "Moses" was originally commissioned by the Contemporary Art Council of the Seattle Art Museum for an exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum and was displayed in Seattle starting in 1968. In 1972, the Art in Public Places Committee recommended to the Seattle Arts Commission that a steel version of "Moses" be made for the Seattle Center. This was the first major expenditure of funds under the City of Seattle's new One Percent for Art Program.
IAS files contain copies from the Seattle Arts Commission's, "A Field Guide to Seattle's Public Art," Seattle: Seattle Arts Commission, 1991; copies from James M. Rupp's "Art in Seattle's Public Places: An Illustrated Guide," Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1992, pg. 114-115; and related materials. Excerpt from Rupp's publication includes discussion and artist's statement concerning the relationship of the parallel upright forms of this sculpture to the horns in Michelangelo's sculpture of Moses.
