    Remarks:
Funded with a National Endowment for the Arts, Art in Public Places grant of $20,000 given in 1971 to the City of Indianapolis. In Feb. 1975, members of the Indianapolis Sesquicentennial Commission purchased the di Suvero sculpture, (then located at the Illinois Center in Chicago), to mark the City's 150th birthday (which had taken place earlier in 1971). The sculpture cost $42,600, funded with a $20,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Art s (NEA) and $20,000 from the sale of city sesquicentennial medallions and cookbooks. The purchased sculpture was loaned to the Whitney Museum in New York City for much of 1975; and did not return to Indianapolis until the Fall of 1976. In November 1977, the sculpture was placed outside the Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis.
The sculpture proved to be controversial and in the late 1970s or March of 1981, it was moved to the headquarters of the White River Park Commission on West Washington Street. Because that location was not highly visible, the sculpture was moved to its current site around 1985-1986. IAS files contain newspaper clipping dated Oct. 27, 1993, which gives history of sculpture controversy.
