IAS files contain copies of articles from the Daily Republican (Galesburg, IL), May 23, 1906; Galesburg Register-Mail, (Galesburg, IL), May 22, 1969 and Dru Cunningham's article, "Mother Bickerdyke - A Nursing Tradition," in The American Legion Magazine, May 1977 also discussing the monument and Bickerdyke's life. The statue commemorates one of America's first war nurses. May Ann Ball (born 1817), attended Oberlin College and at the age of 32 married Robert Bickerdyke of Cincinnati, and moved to Galesburg. At the age of 45, then a widow, she volunteered to serve as a Union army nurse and is credited with serving during 19 battles and setting up 300 hospitals. The memorial was erected at a cost of 5,000 dollars. Eight thousand people attended the dedication ceremony. Monument committee: Women's Relief Corps.
