Charles Eugene Belknap (1846-1929) was a prominent Grand Rapids citizen with a multifaceted career. He served in the Civil War as Captain, was founder of Belknap Wagon Works, and was also a founder of the Grand Rapids Fire Department. He was an alderman, member of Congress, and Mayor of Grand Rapids in 1884. He was a patron of the Camp Fire Girls, and was Commissioner of the Boy Scouts at the time of his death. Captain Belknap was a historian and writer, author of "The Yesterdays of Grand Rapids."
This monument, inspired by the Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls, was funded by the community.
