Peter Cooper is seated in a massive armchair which rests on a pedestal beneath a canopy supported by polished Ionic columns. He holds a cane in his proper left hand. His closed proper right hand rests on his right thigh.

Peter Cooper was a philanthropist, inventor, manufacturer, and the
founder
of the Cooper Union. The Cooper Union was built in 1859 and offered free courses in the arts and sciences. Stanford White designed the pedestal and canopy.
