Dates:  1955. Dedicated Oct. 12, 1955. Medium:  Bronze alloy on a stone base. Dimensions:  Figure: approx. 22 ft. x 93 in. x 69 in.; Base: approx. 72 x 73 x 78 in. (3 1/2 tons.) Inscription:  Eduardo Alfiero Genova 1955/Micheluccio (Bronze plaque on front of base:) Christopher Columbus Gift of the kind citizens of Genoa, Italy, to the city which/so proudly bears the name of Columbus/"Testimonial of the values and virtues which the/figure and enterprise of the great son of Genoa has/entrusted to the human conscience."/Vittorio Pertusio/Mayor of Genoa/"We shall ever cherish and be guided by its/meaning."/M. E. Sensenbrenner/Mayor of Columbus/Dedicated October 12, 1955, before/100,000 grateful Americans signed Founder's mark appears. Description:  A standing portrait of Columbus, facing south. In his proper right hand he holds a rolled document. His proper left hand is placed on his chest. He is wearing a cloak over a gathered garment. His proper right foot is forward. Subject:  Portrait male -- Columbus, Christopher -- Full length Occupation -- Other -- Explorer Ethnic -- Italian Object Type:  Outdoor Sculpture -- Ohio -- Columbus Sculpture Owner:  Administered by City of Columbus Facilities Management Division, 90 West Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215 Located Columbus City Hall, 90 West Broad Street, Plaza, Columbus, Ohio 43215 Remarks:  IAS files contain copies of The Columbus Dispatch (April 8, 1955; Oct. 11, 1955; and Oct. 12, 1955) and copies of the Franklin County Historical Society's "The Historical Bulletin," Oct. 1955, vol. 7, no. 10, pg. 75-77. The statue was a gift of the citizens of Genoa, Italy and cost $16,000. Cast at the Micheluccio Foundry in Pistoia, Italy, the statue was uncrated and erected in Columbus on Oct. 10, 1955. A 20 inch crack was discovered at that time. The base of the statue was already in place, having been designed by the architect when City Hall was built. In 1979, when repair work was being done on the statue, a copper box time capsule was discovered. Among its contents, a railroad bill of lading for shipment of the statue. IAS files also correspondence dated Jan. 28, 1988 from Carmine Menduni, President of Columbus Art Memorial, Inc., which gives a detailed conditions assessment of the statue.
