A tall obelisk placed atop a larger square-shaped lower section with pilasters at each corner. The monument is surrounded by a low fence.

The sculpture was erected by the people of New Mexico through their legislature to honor the heroes who gave their lives in the various battles during the history of New Mexico as a territory and state. Plaque in front of sculpture outside of fence reads: SANTA FE PLAZA/HAS BEEN DESIGNATED A/REGISTERED NATIONAL/HISTORIC LANDMARK/UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE/HISTORIC SITES ACT OF AUGUST 21, 1955/THIS SITE POSSESSES EXCEPTIONAL VALUE/IN COMMEMORATING AND ILLUSTRATING/THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES/U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR/NATIONAL PARK SERVICE/1962.
