Bas-relief plaque mounted on a wall. Relief depicts three men facing left. The center man, possibly a
missionary
, wears a broad hat and a loose robe. He gestures towards two crosses standing to the left. A sick or dying soldier lies outstretched in front of him, his head cradled by the
missionary
's proper left arm. The third man stands behind the
missionary
, holding his hat in his proper left hand. He wears pants, a belted jacket, and boots with spurs. His proper right hand rests on the
missionary
's proper left shoulder.

Remarks:
Initiated by State Senator Jim Ellis; San Diego Unified Port District provided the funds from its art fund. Dedicated to Spaniards buried near the site who died during Gaspar de Portola's and Junipero Serra's exploration of California from San Diego to San Francisco in 1769-70. Site is California Registered Historical Landmark No. 891. IAS files contain complete transcription of nearby plaques and related information.
