    A slender, elongated figure of a man walking with his proper left foot forward. He holds a torch above his head in his proper right hand and looks up towards it. A bag is slung over his proper right shoulder. He holds a book in his proper left hand at his side.

    Remarks: 
    IAS files contain a copy of the Cincinnati Enquirer (May 10, 1968. The statue commemorates John Chapman, a missionary who planted apple orchards in the Ohio Valley frontier. Inscription on a nearby plaque reads: JOHNNY APPLESEED/(JOHN CHAPMAN, SEPTEMBER 26, 1774 - MARCH 18, 1845)/JOHNNY APPLESEED, FIGURE OF LEGEND, WAS A SWEDENBORGIAN/MISSIONARY TO THE OHIO AND INDIANA FRONTIER. SAINTLY/IN HIS DAILY LIFE, HE LOVED LIFE IN ALL ITS FORMS AND/HAD A JOYOUS WILL TO HELP THE EARTH YIELD ITS FRUITS./BIBLE IN HAND AND SACK OF SEEDS SWINGING FROM HIS SHOULDER,/HE PLANTED MANY APPLE ORCHARDS THAT LIVE TODAY IN THE/REGION. MAY HE BE REMEMBERED IN FACT AS WELL AS IN/LEGEND FOR HIS GODLINESS AND GOODNESS.
