Cardinal
James Gibbons (1834-1921), was Archbishop of Baltimore. The original design depicted
Cardinal
Gibbons seated, but the artist instead created a standing figure after speaking with Baltimorians who told her that the
Cardinal
was very active in the community, and often walked throughout the city talking with people. The granite work was done by Harold J. Schaller.
