Description:
A portrait of Reuben E. Fenton with proper right hand on a book that rests on a draped pedestal at his side. In his proper left hand he holds rolled up papers. Fenton is dressed in a waistcoat and jacket. The sculpture is mounted on a block base with a wider bottom tier that is tapered at the top.

Remarks:
The sculpture was funded by a $35,000 bequest in the will of Mrs. Lillian Hayden Fenton, widow of Fenton's son. Reuben E. Fenton was born in Chautauqua County. He was elected to Congress in 1852 and, at the request of Abraham Lincoln, accepted the Republican nomination for governor of New York in 1964. Fenton served as governor until 1969 when he was elected to the United States Senate. He served for six years. Fenton died in 1885. IAS files contain a Fenton Historical Society booklet; a pamphlet entitled, "South Side Walking Tour," Fenton Historical Center; and a booklet about Governor Reuben.
