    Description: 
    Full-length figure in bronze of Francisco de Coronado. He wears period costume, including boots and armour vest; he holds his helmet against his chest in his proper right hand. He points with his proper left arm extended, and looks to the proper left. The sculpture stands on a pedestal made of mortared stones.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture commemorates the Spanish explorer Coronado and his trek through southwest Kansas in 1541. A nearby Kansas Historical Marker summarizes his exploration of the area. The sculpture was designed by Bernard Frazier, and a wax model was given as a gift to the Seward County Historical Society Board of Trustees in 1977. Frazier died shortly after this, and the project was taken over by his son, Malcolm Frazier, and his mother Beverly Frazier. They were assisted by Prof. Eldon Tefft, director of the National Sculpture Center and his students at the University of Kansas. The sculpture was cast at a foundry in Mexico City. Sources report the cost of the sculpture to be between $44,000 and $60,000. IAS files contain copies of related articles from Southwest Daily Times (Liberal, KS), July 1977 - Aug. 1979.
