    Full-length male "portrait" of Juan Rodriques Cabrillo. He stands sideways on what appears to be the bow of a ship. He wears a cape draped over his shoulders and has shoulder-length hair. His proper right hand rests on his proper right knee.

    Remarks: 
    Funded through the Federal Art Project with additional funds for materials from the citizens of San Pedro. Juan Rodriques Cabrillo (d. 1543) was a Portuguese-born explorer in the service of Spain. In 1542, he discovered and explored the Southern California coast and the San Diego and Monterey Bays.
    IAS files contain copy of Municipal Art Department Inventory form; excerpt from Nancy Dustin Wall Moure, "Painting & Sculpture in California," Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1980 (which gives date of monument as 1934); and related newspaper clippings, including one from the Los Angeles Times, March 1, 1936.
