Inscription:  (On front of base:) ALEXANDER TURNEY/STEWART/FOUNDER/OF/GARDEN CITY/1869 Description:  Bronze portrait bust of Alexander Turney Stewart. He has a beard and wears a shirt, jacket and bow tie. The sculpture stands on a round, columnar concrete base. Subject:  Portrait male -- Stewart, Alexander Turney -- Bust Occupation -- Other -- Colonizer Object Type:  Outdoor Sculpture -- New York -- Garden City Sculpture Owner:  Administered by City of Garden City, Department of Parks, 351 Stewart Avenue, Village Hall, Garden City, New York 11530 Located Hubbel Plaza, Traffic circle, north entrance to Garden City Station, Garden City, New York Remarks:  Stewart was the founder of Garden City. The sculpture was commissioned for the city and was dedicated during the town's centennial celebrations. The base of the sculpture may be a supporting column from the facade of Pennsylvania Station, was salvaged when the station was razed. IAS files contain copy of related excerpt from M. H.
