    Description: 
    Stephen F. Austin is seated on the topmost tier of a two-level truncated pyramidal base. His crossed legs rest on the second level of the base. He is dressed in a necktie, vest, waist-length jacket with lapels and tails, and riding pants strapped under his heeled boots. His hair is full and wavy, extending to the nape of his neck. His proper left leg is crossed over his proper right leg. His proper left hand partially holds and rests on a stack of land grant papers for the State of Texas. With his proper right hand he holds the lapel of his jacket. The base is set in a stone-filled area framed by timbers, on top of a grassy mound edged with pink granite curbing on a tier of concrete, edged with pink granite curbing.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was installed by the State of Texas in 1936 with $14,000 in funds appropriated by the federal government to commemorate one hundred years of Texas independence. Donald Nelson was the architect. IAS files contain detailed dimensions for sculpture. IAS files contain a related excerpt from Harold Schoen's "Monuments Erected by the State of Texas to Commemorate the Centenary of Texas Independence," Austin, TX: Commission of Control for Texas Centennial Celebrations, 1938. IAS files contain a portion of the dedication program; and a San Felipe city ordinance authorizing the erection of the sculpture, approved March 29, 1938.
