Owner:
Village of Dolgeville, 41 South Main Street, Municipal Hall, front lawn, Dolgeville, New York 13329
Provenance:
Formerly located Alfred Dolge School, Main Street, Dolgeville, New York until Oct. 12, 1991.
Remarks:
Alfred Dolge, a German immigrant, founded the village of Dolgeville in 1874 and eventually brought nearly 3,000 Germans to the village. He donated money to start schools and the library, and also backed the Little Falls-Dolgeville Railroad which began running in 1892. He later left the village for California after he claimed that financial advisors had betrayed him. He died in 1922. The bronze bust was cast by a New York City foundry in 1948. Local industries and citizens contributed $456.29 for the memorial. Of that amount, $325 was used to cover the cost of the base. The bust was a gift from the four sons of Alfred Dolge and was originally located at the Alfred Dolge School, but was moved to its present location on October 12, 1991, during Dolgeville's Centennial Celebration. It was rededicated in October 1991. IAS files contain related articles from the Dolgeville Republican, June 3, 1948, pg. 1; July 1, 1948, pg. 1; July 8, 1948; Sept. 21, 1948; and Sept. 23, 1948, pg. 1; and The Sunday Observer-Dispatch, Oct. 6, pg. 3B. The SOS! survey gives the execution date as Feb. 1893, but the Dolgeville Republican, Sept. 23, 1948, article notes that the plaster model was made in 1895. Carl Brasch is Alfred Dolge's cousin.
