    Description: 
    Installed high up on the north cornice is a standing portrait of King Alfred the Great holding a book in his proper right hand and tools in his proper left hand. He wears long robes tied at the waist, a cape, a crown, and tall boots. He has a long beard and moustache.

    Remarks: 
    One of four courthouse sculptures of men representing the law in all its human form, the human sources of law. The sculptures are installed on the cornice on the north side of the courthouse. King Alfred the Great (900 AD) represents the development of English common law. Lehman & Schmidt were the architects of the courthouse.
