Remarks:
Commissioned ca. 1911 by the Sanders Memorial Society and later, the Sanders Memorial Commission. Funded with a $5,000 appropriation from the 12th session of the Montana Legislature and donations from pioneers and Senator W. A. Clark. Sculpture was originally installed in the State House rotunda, and was moved in 1963 for Capitol renovations. About 1985, it was moved to its current site. Wilbur Fisk Sanders was a Montana attorney and prosecutor. IAS files include a related article from the Great Falls Tribune, Sept. 29, 1963, and an excerpt from the book "History of Montana."
