The sculpture was carved at the insistence of two former Confederates,Henry Watterson and Walter N. Haldeman, who were editor and president of the Courier-Journal, respectively. The statue in 1876 was originally placed in a niche above the main entrance of The Courier-Journal building when it was located at 3rd and Green Streets. It was donated to the Main Library in 1912 or 1913. IAS files contain related articles from: Filson Club History Quarterly 50 (1976) pg. 265; Courier Journal (Kentucky), Sept. 14 & 15, 1955.
