    Description: 
    Full-length portrait of General Sidney Sherman, standing atop granite platform, with etched granite monolith behind him. Sherman is dressed in a general's uniform without the hat. His proper right foot is slightly forward. His proper left hand rests on the handle of a sword at his proper left side. The sculpture is mounted on a block base. Behind the sculpture is a tall monolith containing a relief intaglio of Sherman atop a rearing horse. Sherman raises a sword in his proper right hand.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture cost $14,000 and was funded through federal funds given to commemorate the Texas Centennial. Cecere created the free-standing sculpture and Bourdelle created the relief intaglio. Donald Nelson was the architect. IAS files contain a related excerpt from Harold Schoen's "Monuments Erected by the State of Texas to Commemorate the Centenary of Texas Independence," Austin, TX: Commission of Control for Texas Centennial Celebrations, 1938. IAS files contain related articles from the Galveston Daily News, May 28, 1979, pg. 1+; and March 3, 1985.
    A nearby plaque reads: General Sidney Sherman/born in Mass. July 29, 1804/Died in Texas Aug. 1, 1873/Erected by the State of Texas- 1936 with funds appropriated by the federal Government to commemorate 100 years of Texas independence./Remember the Alamo; Remember Goliad.
