Description:
The standing figure of a Union soldier wearing a military uniform which includes a knee-length coat with a cape. His head is bowed and he holds his rifle vertically in front of him, with the barrel pointed down and his hads resting atop the rifle butt. He holds his cap in his proper right hand and rests it against his proper left shoulder. He stands with his feet together atop a rectangular granite base. On the top front of the base there are two crossed palm leaves carved in relief.

Remarks:
The monument was erected by the Minnesota Monument Commission, established by an act of the Minnesota state legislature in 1913, to organize the construction of memorials honoring Minnesota soldiers of the Civil War who were buried in national cemeteries in southern states.
