    Remarks:
John Albert Johnson (1861-1909) served as governor of Minnesota from 1904 until his death. Earlier in his career he was editor of the St. Peter Herald (St. Peter, MN). The idea for a memorial to Governor Johnson came in a letter from C. D. O'Brien to the St. Paul Pioneer Press (St. Paul, MN). The St. Paul Pioneer Press took charge of a statewide fundraising effort, and C. D. O'Brien was appointed president of the Johnson memorial commission. Some 90,000 people, including school children, contributed no more than $1 each to raise approximately $24,000 for the monument. IAS files contain newspaper article from the St. Paul Pioneer Press (St. Paul, MN), Oct. 19, 1912, front page, discussing plans for the dedication. IAS files also contain related excerpts from book by Moira F. Harris, "Monumental Minnesota: A Guide to Outdoor Sculpture," [St. Paul:] Pogo Press, 1992, pg. 12-14.
