Remarks:
The painting was on loan to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. from 2005-2007.
The painting was commissioned by Jonathan Sturges, as a gift for William Cullen Bryant. It remained in the Bryant family until his daughter Julia donated it in the early 20th century to what was then the Lenox Library (now New York Public Library). In 2005, the painting was acquired via silent auction by the Walton Family Foundation. The painting has become part of the collection of the Foundation's Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
The painting was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1849, no. 180.
