The memorial was erected by the Dorothy Riply Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and friends to commemorate the valor and victory of the Colonist forefathers at Pequot Swamp in 1637. The Battle of Pequot Swamp was an engagement with the Indians of the area over possession of the land. For related information see: Mary Philthera Root's "Chapter Sketches,
Connecticut
D.A.R. Patron Saints,"
Connecticut
D.A.R., 1901, pg. 329-337. The troughs were refurbished and a new lantern added in 1965. In 1991, the fountain was cleaned.
