Inscription:  (dated) signed Description:  This monument commemorating the Lewis and Clark Expedition's exploration of the Louisiana Purchase was inspired by an entry from William Clark's journal for June 4, 1804 describing the group's campsite on a bluff that would become the site of the Missouri State Capitol. The monument depicts Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, along with a French-Canadian-Shawnee hunter named George Drouillard, Clark's slave York, and Lewis' Newfoundland dog Seaman standing on a limestone bluff. The figures are installed atop 1,200 tons of southeast Missouri limestone slabs, below which is a fountain and fountain pool.
