    Description: 
    French limestone memorial. At the top is a bas-relief of Apollo kneeling with his head bowed. He holds a lyre and a palm frond is in the background. On top of the memorial are a pair of ram's horns with a sun burst between them. On the sides of the memorial are carved thistles that allude to the Scottish ancestry of the Walkers.

    Remarks: 
    David Valentine Walker Sr. (1864-1929) was founder of the Walkers Department Store located on the first hundred block of Main. The store was run by David Valentine Walker Jr. (1896-1970) until his death, and after his death it was closed. The Walker Memorial was designed and executed while Moore was in Paris on the renewal of his Guggenheim Fellowship in 1930-1931. It was commissioned by the David Valentine Walker's wife, Eleanor Johnston Walker. IAS files contain article from Wichita Eagle, April 13, 1999; transcription of text found on memorial; and transcript of related artist's correspondence.
