    Description: 
    A bronze portrait of Father Isaac Joques mounted on a granite base stands in front of an arched granite backdrop that has relief figures on each side. Father Joques is bearded and wears robes and a long cape. He walks with his proper right hand raised in a gesture of greeting and a cross held in his proper left hand. On one side of the granite backdrop are relief portraits of Brother Rene Goupil and Brother Guillaume Couture dressed in buckskins. On the other side of the backdrop are relief portraits Lalande kneeling in prayer and the Otrihoure. The sculpture is surrounded by a wrought iron fence.

    Remarks: 
    The monument commemorates Father Isaac Joques (1607-1646), a martyred French Jesuit who named Lac Du Saint Sacrement, later renamed Lake George. Joques was taken captive by Mohawks while he traveled with two other Jesuits, Brother Rene Goupil and Brother Guillaume Couture. Goupil was the first white physician in the Adirondacks, and was also martyred. The monument was erected by the State of New York at a cost of $75,000. The 1994 SOS! survey reports that a falling limb broke part of the sculpture a few years ago, and it was hastily repaired. The Shield of Joan of Arc on the rear base is emblematic of Joques' birthplace of Orleans, France. Lake George Battlefield Park was once known as Lake George Battleground Park.
