    Description:
A bas-relief, on an irregularly-shaped bronze slab, depicting Major Edward Edgar Hartwick standing with two orphaned French children before their parent's grave. Markham is dressed in a uniform, with knee-high boots, hat, and high collared jacket. His proper right hand rests on the head of a young girl, who is kneeling in prayer. His proper left hand encircles the shoulder of a young boy, who stands holding a handkerchief in his proper left hand and raising his proper right hand to his face. The parent's grave is marked by a lopsided cross, topped with a military helmet, and a wreath resting against it. Below the figures, near the bottom of the monument, is a cavalry insignia and a castle. The bronze memorial plaque is set within a flanking granite exedra with side benches and a low granite projecting platform in the center.

    Remarks:
The memorial marks the grave of Edward Edgar Hartwick, born in 1871, who graduated from West Point in 1893 and served in the military during the Spanish-American War. He commanded the 9th Calvary at San Juan Hill and served during the Indian Campaigns in Wyoming. He resigned from the Army in 1899, only to volunteer again at the outbreak of World War I. Hartwick died in France in 1918, where he commanded the U. S. Army 20th Engineers. When not serving in the military, Hartwick worked in the lumber trade. Architect W. Liance Cottrell designed the sculpture. IAS files contain related excerpts from Clarence M. Burton and Agnes Burton's "History of Wayne County and City of Detroit," S. J.
