This sculpture is one of eight or ten castings made from the original plaster mold commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III in 1875. The sculpture remained in the foundry in Paris, until the foundry was bought by the New York company of World House in 1958. The company's owner, Mr. Mayer, sent the sculpture to New Orleans on consignment, however the city was unable to pay the $35,000 to buy the sculpture. The sculpture remained in storage provided by T. Smith & Son until 1964 when Charles de Gaulle and the cities of Orleans, Paris, Rheims, and Rouen bought the sculpture and presented it as a gift to the City of New Orleans. The sculpture went back into storage until the city completed the Place de France site in 1972.
The sculpture was regilded in 1984. The regilding was a joint effort between the City of Orleans, France, and the City of New Orleans in cooperation with the International Trade Mart.
