Remarks:
The city of Duluth was named for the
French
explorer, Daniel Greysolon, Sieur Du Luth (1639-1710). The sculpture was a gift from Albert L. Ordean, Duluth banker, civic leader, and philanthropist, whose will stated that a fund should be created for a statue of Du Luth. Although the fund was established in 1928, when Ordean died, it was not until 1963 that a contract was let to Lipchitz for $77,000. Since no one knows what Du Luth looked like, Lipchitz created a symbolic image of the explorer. The sculpture was cast in Pietrasanta, Italy. IAS files contain a related article from the Duluth News Tribune, Nov. 6, 1965, pg. 1, describing the dedication ceremony; an undated article from the Supplement to the Duluth Herald and News Tribune; and photocopies of several museum flyers on the sculpture.
