Louis Amadeus Rappe (1801-1877), born in Audrehem, France, was ordained a priest in 1829 and was later recruited by Bishop John Purcell to work in Ohio. He arrived in America in 1840. He was involved in the Total Abstinence Movement and built several churches in the towns neighboring Toledo. Rappe was consecrated bishop of the newly established diocese of Cleveland in 1847. As bishop he oversaw the opening of orphanages, the first general hospital in Cleveland, and a seminary. He resigned as bishop in 1870 and spent his last years as a missionary in Vermont and Canada.
