    Remarks:
In 1910, the model for this sculpture won an honorable mention at the Paris Salon; later a heroic-sized version was commissioned for New York City's Riverside Park; and in 1915, the sculpture won the Purple Rosette from the French government. In 1921, A. Pyatt Andrew asked to buy a copy of the sculpture for the city of Gloucester as a memorial for the fifty-seven Gloucester men who died in World War I. At the time the sculpture was commissioned, the sculptor was a resident of Gloucester. Frederick G. Hall, a Boston painter and etcher with a summer home at Gloucester, created the base. Because the cast that she used for the Riverside Park sculpture was broken, she had to create a new one for the Gloucester sculpture. She modeled the horse after a huge Percheron named Frank who pulled the Gloucester fire truck until the early 1920s. IAS files contain excerpts from the dedication program.
Incorporated into the base are eight stones that come from various buildings associated with Joan of Arc's life. These include: two from Chateau of Chinon where Joan of Arc was recognized heir to the throne in March 1429; four from Rheims Cathedral where three months later she led the heir to be crowned; and two from Rouen --one from the castle dungeon of Philip Augustus, built in 1207, where Joan of Arc's witchcraft and heresy trial took place, and one from the wall of the Rouen Cathedral where she was judged on the eve of her execution on May 29, 1431.
The sword she carries in her proper right hand is a replacement made of a synthetic material. For additional information see scrapbooks located at the Cape Ann Historical Society Museum, Gloucester, Massachusetts.
